Applicants are invited for the post of Consultant in Gastroenterology to join the existing Gastroenterology Team at the University Hospitals of Derby & Burton.

We are looking to develop our specialist GI services by appointing Consultants in Gastroenterology.

\n

The successful applicant will support in the delivery of high quality, timely endoscopy care, out‑patient clinics and inpatient care.

\nMain duties of the job\n

The Gastroenterology team are a dedicated, motivated, forward thinking and friendly team.

\n

We provide general and specialist services to our patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders, both benign and malignant, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, enteral/parenteral nutrition, complex gastrointestinal disorders and hepatology services.

\n

We have excellent endoscopy facilities including a 3‑room endoscopy suite at QHB and a 2‑room endoscopy suite at SRP, which are all undergoing final JAG accreditation. We participate in the national bowel cancer screening programme across the acute hospitals.

\nJob responsibilities\n

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust serves Southern Derbyshire, East Staffordshire and some parts of adjoining areas; Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire.

\n

The Department of Gastroenterology provides both luminal and hepatology services. We are looking to appoint a full time consultant to join the existing vibrant and dynamic team at UHDB. The posts are suitable for STs acquiring CCT or established consultants looking to subspecialise within a large department.

\n

Luminal and hepatology services are provided on 3 wards across UHDB. There are clinical nurse specialists on both sites, including IBD nurse specialists and an upper GI cancer nurse working alongside the QHB gastroenterologists to maintain care delivery. Across UHDB there are specialist nutrition and dietician teams to support specific gastroenterology disorders/diseases. The post holder will be expected to work across UHDB sites.

\n

Our endoscopy unit at QHB is a modern 3‑room facility with the latest equipment carrying out over 9,500 procedures annually. A range of specialist diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are carried out including colonoscopy, large polyp EMR and PEGs. There is dedicated capacity each day for inpatient endoscopy and we provide bowel screening. We also have a 2‑room facility at Sir Robert Peel Hospital in Tamworth.

\n

At QHB, the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is staffed by a team of acute physicians who conduct the post‑take rounds. Consultant gastroenterologists provide a service week system with elective activity cancelled to allow full ward cover and review of new referrals. Currently there is a commitment to 1:16 general medical on call, this is under review and will be subject to change over the ensuing few months, leading to a reduction in frequency and/or changes in the duties involved whilst on call.

For the successful candidate, there is the opportunity to develop a particular GI interest for instance in IBD, nutrition, GI cancer, therapeutic endoscopy.

\nQualifications\n

• Possession of MRCP
\n
• MBBS or equivalent
\n
• Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at date of commencement OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a CESR application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC.

• European Speciality Examination in Gastroenterology & Hepatology or equivalent
\n
• Advanced Life Support (ALS) qualification
\n
• Additional higher medical / scientific degree relevant to the specialty
\n

\nClinical Experience\n

• Experience of general medicine

• Evidence of independent clinical practice
\n
• Experienced in making clinical decisions & managing risk.
\n
• Minimum 1 year NHS experience
\n
• Interest in an area of hepatology complimentary to existing consultants
\n

\nTeaching\n

• Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduate
\n
• Experience of supervising F1, F2, ST trainees.
\n
• Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
\n
• Specific teaching qualification
\n
• Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates

• Experience of teaching endoscopy
\n
• Attended a recognised teaching training course
\n

• Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
